After Walking Jack

old dog,

the decade has tried its damndest

to gristle, desiccate, waylay us,

and I have become windswept-

woman, and you, on your last legs

still so patient, even in the rains;

O cold Vancouver, such cruelty

you deal tender creatures

like Jack,

and me, here on this boat

rocking gently in the wake,

can only pet that good dog

to his sleep.
